Bài nài viết cho những người chưa bao giờ học võ nào khác ngoài Aikido ra. Những người có kinh nghiệm thì sẽ thấy dư thừa, nhưng theo sự nhậm xét của tui thì có rất nhiều môn sinh aikido, nhất là mấy ''của quý'', không biết nắm tay khi đấm. Bài này là cho mấy người đó.

Quá đầy đủ anh Aiki, nhưng chỉ có Taekwondo là phài dùng cái thumb đè xuống luôn cả 2 ngón tay kia cho cú đấm mạnh hơn (Theo WTF). Nhưng khi lên đến cao đẳng thì không nắm chắc cú đấm thà lỏng nhưng đến mục tiêu thì gồng cứng lại.
Không ngờ 1 đề tài nhìn nhỏ nhưng lại được bác Aiki biến hóa thành lớn đầy đủ như vậy !

How to make a fist is one of the first things taught in karate, kung fu, taekwondo, or any art that includes punching or striking. Thus it is surprising that many practitioners have never been taught how to form their fist correctly.
I''d guess that most readers of this article are pretty confident that they are already making a proper fist. However, over the years, when I''ve conducted seminars with groups other than my own students, I''ve invariably found that many participants, including many of higher rank, do not make a properor at least an effectivefist. Even among my own students, improper technique very often creeps in, much to my annoyance. And, much to my chagrin, I sometimes catch myself at it, too.
Many karate, taekwondo and other practitioners get away with bad fist formation for years because they never actually hit anything with any force. Most of their punches are to the air, without contact. When they do make contact with a target such as a makiwara (practice hitting board or post) or heavy bag (even ribs), they feather the technique so much that their impact is more of a forceful pat or push than a real punch. Protective gloves while useful to prevent possible injury only serve to cover up this problem. Hitting a makiwara with an improperly formed fist is at least a waste of time and is often a cause of injury. At worst, it develops bad technique that can take great effort to overcome.
Students who practice this way, either consciously or mindlessly, are deceiving themselves. Their practice is not giving them the optimal benefit it should and they are unprepared for actual combat. Among these people are the "karate and other martial arts experts" you hear about breaking their hands or wrists if they ever get involved in a real fight. The same thing happens to boxers who get too used to the wrapping and padding and then break their hands in minor squabbles on the street (Mike Tyson breaking his hand punching an annoying dweeb in a Harlem clothing store springs to mind).
I know what you are thinking. "Oh, here comes the lecture about striking with the first two knuckles of the fist and not the other knuckles that don''t have strong bone alignment internal to the wrist, and keeping the top of the fist aligned with the plain of the forearm." Not really. I have assumed that if you are reading this article these lessons have long been digested. I am talking about something completely different.
Instead, the most common mistake I''ve seen in making a fist is something you may not even be aware of the tendency to over-tighten the muscles of the hand in such a way that the soft tissue between the knuckles is tautly stretched and, as a result, the skin, muscle, connective tissue, and knuckles are stressed. The result is that beneath the surface of the skin, the bones of the hand and fingers (especially the first two) are pulling away from each other, a sort of flattening or flarring outdefinitely not an example of e pluribus unum. When you make a fist in this manner, then hit a makiwaraor, perhaps, a personreally hard you might damage yourself as much as you damage your target.
If your target is harder than expected, or if it twists unexpectedly with the impact, you can damage yourself more than you damage the targetsplit skin and torn and/or strained muscle between the knuckles. Often too, you damage the knuckle surfaces. Sometimes you get broken bones. Even if the only injury is split skin, there is a danger of infection and, worse, you can''t whack anything with gusto until it''s healed. In a fight that might limit follow-up punches with the same hand if you are aware of injury, but if not, and adrenalin has masked feedback, you might just end the fight successfully only to find you have injured yourself more permanently than your opponent.
In short, an improperly formed fist is hard and brittle, like a plastic bag packed completely full of ice cubes. There''s some heft there, but the bag is easily torn and the ice cubes are easily cracked or crushed.
A well-made fist is soft, supple, and pliable on the surface. The hard mass beneath the surface can be shaped as needed for optimal use, depending upon the situation and the target. It''s like a thick rubber bag filled with BB shot, which can be gathered or shaped at will.
To make a fist optimally, you must squeeze the knuckles together, rather than stretch them apart. Likewise, you must squeeze the bones within the hand together, so that they reinforce each other and work as a large cumulative mass rather than as a group of individual small bones. Over-squeezing, however, is counterproductive, as it causes the hand as a whole and the individual bones within to buckle on contact. It''s also counterproductive to squeeze the hand at all except upon impact. Squeezing before impact slows you down and robs power from the punch; maintaining the squeeze after impact slows you down and leaves you vulnerable to trapping and counterattacks.
What doesn''t matter much at all is the position of the thumb. It''s actually easier to make a proper fist using the fist formation found in such styles as Isshin Ryu, in which the thumb tip is pressed against the fold of the second knuckle of the forefinger.
When making a fist with the thumb tucked under and bracing the third knuckles of the forefinger and middle finger, as in Shotokan and most Shorin styles, care must be taken to leave the thumb relaxed, but not so relaxed as to hang below the fist. If the thumb is tense, it acts as a lever pulling the bones at the base of the hand apart. Contact in that case can result in lower hand and wrist injuries.
At left the fist is compressed internally, while it is pliable and supple on the surface a strong fist. At right the fist is over stressed, internal tension actually working to pull the first two knuckles outward and away from each other an internally weak fist.
Here is a simple test to determine whether a fist is too hard and tense or, on the other hand, too loose. Using the thumb press into the gap between the fist and second knuckles of the fist (Don''t use the thumbnail). If the thumb is able to penetrate the fist, or if the thumb cannot penetrate but still causes appreciable pain, the fist is not optimal. If the fist is optimal, the pressing thumb is merely a nuisance.
Here is another way to feel difference between the two kinds of fists. With your thumb still in place between your two knuckles, first slowly compress the fist. The fist should be still relatively loose. You should be able feel the fist and the two first knuckles compress together. Now tighten the fist using more muscle tension. If your hold your thumb underneigh (bracing the third knuckles of the forefinger and middle finger) you will feel the first knuckle separate from the first (the first digit pressing the bottom of the fist finger inward, thus leveraging the striking knuckle outward). You will also feel the little finger squeeze in such a way that the top knuckle pulls downward and inward this pulling action distorting the whole fist and breaking its consolidated structure.
Theo lời kể của một người quen làm trong bệnh viện, sau những vụ ẩu đả đánh lộn nhiều người bị chấn thương bàn tay. Cú đấm vào những chỗ cứng như quai hàm, hàm răng, gò má ... rất dễ làm nắm đấm bị thương tích. Tui đã từng gặp một anh chàng tập karate thành thạo nhưng sau một lần đụng độ ngoài đường đấm đá tưng bừng, xương bàn tay bị gãy phải treo tay tòn teng trước ngực cả tháng trời. Dân karate mà còn bị như vậy, huống gì các aikidoka ít khi nào tập đấm thì càng nên cẩn thận hơn. Vì vậy, sau khi đã bàn qua về cách tạo nắm đấm cho đúng, bây giờ xin bà con góp ý thêm về cách đấm và đấm vào đâu là hiệu quả nhất.

Tui chỉ nói 1 cách tổng quát, xin mấy anh chị em bổ sung nhe!
Thường thì các võ sinh aikido ít khi tập đấm, những đòn đấm trước khi vào đòn chỉ làm rất nhẹ cho có hình thức thôi. Lâu ngày thành thói quen nên bảo đấm thật thì ngại lắm, chưa kể đến yếu tố tâm lý cho rằng aikido là môn võ tình thương hoà hợp, sao lại đấm chặt hung bạo vậy ? Theo tác giả cuốn ebook ''aikido from the inside out'', tuy đòn atemi trong aikido chỉ nhắm làm phân tâm đối phương chứ không cố ý đả thương, nhưng trong trường hợp tự vệ chính đáng và cần thiết thì nên ra đòn atemi mạnh mẽ. Đậy quả là một nghịch lý, lúc tập thì đấm ít và đấm nhẹ nhưng gặp chuyện thì lại bảo đấm mạnh. Không khéo thì mình đấm người ta chưa ăn thua gì mà tay mình đã ê ẩm hoặc trặc gãy ! Để giải quyết trường hợp này, trong khi tập luyện chắc chúng ta nên để ý hơn cách chặt, xỉa, đấm. Tuy không dũng mãnh như karate/tkd/hapkido nhưng cũng đấm chặt cho dứt khoát một chút, đừng hời hợt quá. Mục tiêu thì nhắm vào mấy chỗ mềm mềm một tí cho chắc ăn, chẳng hạn mắt, mũi, cổ, mang tai ... Trong lúc bất ngờ nếu mình chọt được vào mấy chỗ đó thì địch thủ sẽ lung túng phần nào, mình thừa cơ dọt thẳng, như vậy cũng vẫn giữ được tinh thần ôn hoà của hiệp khí đạo phải không ạ ?
Diễm xin được góp ý tho những gì mình biết, chứ không dám qua mặt các đàn anh, đàn chị ở đây:
Hiện nay có 3 lối đấm được nhiều người cho là tiêu chuẩn và đặc trưng trong làng võ thuật.
1. Lối đấm theo các môn phái hiện đại của Nhật, Hàn Quốc và Việt Nam như Taekwondo, Karate, Kempo, Vovinam. Đặc điểm của lối đấm nầy chính là sự xoáy cổ tay khi đưa quả đấm đến mục tiêu.
A. Tay nằm nằm cạnh hông, lòng bàn khép chặt ngửa lên.
B. Bàn tay đẩy tới trên đường thẳng, khi cùi chỏ vừa qua thân người thì bắt đầu xoáy cổ tay, khi đến mục tiêu lòng bàn tay nằm xoay xuống dưới.
C. Nắm đấm đến mục tiêu bằng 2 ngón tay (Index và Middle finger) được kiềm giử bằng chính ngón cái. Khi đến mục tiêu rút về ngay.
Ưu Điểm: Mạnh, vừa công vừa thủ, dễ đánh khi cần áp dụng các thế liên hoàn tiếp.
Điểm Yếu: Chỉ xử dụng và tấn công khi có khoảng cách dài, thời gian đánh chậm.

2. Lối đấm theo các môn phái Trung Hoa, nhất là các môn thuộc về Nam Phái, nổ bật nhất là môn Vĩnh Xuân, hay còn gọi là Thiếu Lâm Vịnh Xuân quyền.
A. Cú đấm thường được đánh khi đứng theo thế Âm dương tấn, hoặc Kỵ mã tấn thấp. Đấm tay nằm ngang, ngón cái hướng lên trên.
B. Từ thế thủ đánh tay về phía mục tiêu, người thả lỏng khi đến mục tiêu mới bắt đầu phát lực.
C. Bàn tay đến mục tiêu bằng 3 ngón tay, khi chạm mục tiêu được rút về ngay thế thủ
Ưu Điểm: Nhanh, áp dụng bất kể khoảng cách gần hay xa, gần mục tiêu khi đối diện địch thủ, đấm và rút nhanh.
Điểm Yếu: Không có nhiều lực, không và khó áp dụng các đòn liên hoàn quyền hoặc cước.

3. Lối đấm theo kiểu Quyền Anh, Võ tự do, Muay Thai.
A. 2 tay che mặt, đấm từ thế che mặt, dùng hết sức lao về phiá trước, người nghiêng tạo nên mục tiêu nhỏ nếu bị tấn công, đấm và rút về nhanh. Đặt sức nặng toàn thân vào quả đấm.
Ưu Điểm: Mạnh, nhanh, dùng thêm đòn tay liên hoàn dễ dàng.
Điểm Yếu: Khó nếu áp dụng liên hoàn cước không thuần thục, khó áp dụng trong khoảng cách ngắn.

Muốn có được 1 cú đấm "ăn tiền" ta phải có được các yếu tố sau đây:
Thế tấn hay lối đứng chắc chắn.
Dùng mông như 1 lò xo có sức bật mạnh.
Hơi thở điều hòa, thở ra khi chạm mục tiêu.
Mục tiêu di chuyển chậm hơn ta.
Tay phải xoáy trước khi đến mục tiêu, như luồng bay của viên đạn.
Các cú đấm phải được giữ chặt các ngón tay khi chạm đến mục tiêu.
"Kiai" từ đan điền khi chạm mục tiêu.
Lý Tiểu Long từng khi cho rằng cú đấm của Karate và cú đấm của các võ phái Trung hoa (như Vịnh Xuân) như sau: Cú đấm Karate giống như dùng một cây xà-ben (crowbar) trong khi 1 cú đấm của Vịnh Xuân giống như 1 trái banh sắt được nối liền với 1 sợ dây xích quay với tốc độ cao.Cách phê bình của con rồng họ Lý đã tạo nên nhiều hận thù, tranh cải trong giới võ thuật tại Hoa kỳ trong suốt thập niên 80 cho đến hiện nay.
